Whilst caravan tyres are essentially no different to the 6ply and 8ply tyres found on light commercial vehicles, it is important to note that tyre ageing is often a much greater issue than the legality of the remaining tread depth.

 Caravan tyres are neither steering nor driving and as such are unlikely to wear the tread sufficiently for this to become a problem over the life of the tyre. However, it is critical to check the age and sidewall condition of caravan tyres, being stood for long periods of time exposes the tyres to excessive deterioration due to weathering. This can be identified by the cracking or crazing of the sidewall and within the tread grooves.

 This cracking not only significantly weakens the structure of the tyre but can also be responsible for allowing air to slowly seep from the tyre, reducing tyre pressure, increasing heat and in extreme cases causing 'blow-outs'

The Caravan Club recommends that tyres should be replaced every 5 years to ensure safety regardless of remaining tread depth.
